SACRAMENTO - Assembly Speaker Karen Bass has selected Alberto Torrico (D-Newark) to serve as Assembly Majority Floor Leader.

Torrico, the son of immigrants from Bolivia, is in his second term. He represents the 20th Assembly District, which includes parts of Alameda and Santa Clara counties. He previously served as chair of the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee.

"I´m honored that Speaker Bass has called upon me to serve in this critical position," Torrico said. "The challenges that California faces are daunting, but not insurmountable. She is the ideal leader to face these challenges and I look forward to working with the rest of her leadership team."

Torrico, whose mother is of Japanese descent, is past chairman of the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. He is also a member of the Latino Legislative Caucus and is the first person ever to belong to both groups.

As a freshman legislator, he chaired the Assembly Public Employment, Retirement and Social Security Committee, where he played a leading role in opposing the administration´s efforts to privatize public pensions. A strong advocate for affordable housing, Torrico won a legislative victory for tenants when the governor signed his bill extending to 60 days the time renters facing no-fault evictions have to find new homes.

Torrico has emerged as a leader on high tech issues and was recognized as the California High Tech Legislator of the Year by the AeA during a ceremony last year.

He is also carrying AB 2262, a bill to extend the state´s Safe Surrender Baby law to seven days. He will amend the bill soon to incorporate recommendations from a recently concluded state audit that he requested last year.

Prior to his election to the Assembly, Torrico served on the Newark City Council and ran a private law practice. He earned his J.D. from the University of California Hastings College in 1995 and his bachelor of science in political science from Santa Clara University in 1991.

He and his wife Raquel have a son, Mateo, and a daughter, Amy-Elyzabeth.
