The public had time to sit around and speculate what the stimulus check would be used for and as the uses grew so did the anticipation, The day finally came when the check shows up in the mail box or bank accounts, there it was $ 600,00 dollars. Not enough to pay rent or a mortgage, it may buy approximately 150 gallons of gas, it´s barley enough to pay a teenagers cell phone bill for a month. In other words six hundred dollars in hand wasn´t nearly as impressive as the anticipation of receiving it had been.
Was the stimulus package purely political? It seems what we experienced was a minor adjustment in the economy and a readjustment of some very questionable practices by some major financial instructions. As it turns out what happened was the housing boom caught up with the consumers and the oil boom is about to be exposed for what it is, financial market speculation.
The commodities market is responsible for the high prices of oil not the oil producers, that and the insane rush to convert to ethanol as the main source of energy. God created carbon emissions for a reason and God will control carbon emissions for the same reason. I have no idea if God is animal, vegetable or mineral, I couldn´t describe him, her or it if I were ask to. I am convinced there´s something that keeps correcting all of mans errors. Recently there is beginning to be some logical arguments against global warming, as well as this being the coldest winter in many years, I´m sure its Gods way of telling the fear-monger to back off and get real.
I have a friend Greg Bowers a young man 50 years my junior who is today´s typical young man well on his way to influencing future generations on how to define their responsibilities. As a high school graduate Greg chose rather than continue to be a burden on the system he would be a tax paying contributor to the system creating opportunities on his own. In less than a decade Greg has worked his way up to becoming a field supervisor for a national painting company. His job is to acquire workers and make sure they do the job according to the specks required by the property owner. His job takes him too many cities in several states. It requires late night visits to job sites and multiple phone calls from both workers and customers in his off time. It´s often frustrating, his solos is he´s in control. This is the new work ethic developing in America, one that says I can do it without government intervention. He can do it with out trade unions dictating to him. Greg his boss and God are in charge. However competition plays a vital role as well.
Greg is required to compete for the jobs, and for the labor it´s what makes him more responsible than a government bureaucrat. Greg knows how to compete as apposed to resorting to governmental bribery and extortion.
Decisions made in Washington are normally made for the number of votes they´ll attract. When government bureaucrats write labor laws there´s never a clause requiring performance by workers, only wages and benefits provided by the employer are regulated, often to the point they can´t be complied with. This creates a cadre of independent workers not regulated by government and trade union mandates. This is what´s given Greg his job along with hundreds of other Greg´s. The over regulating and over taxing is what turns the Greg´s against the current political parties. It´s only a matter of time until these young men and women rebel and either change the two parties or create new ones that closer reflect the needs and wants of the country.
For decades it´s been a tradition to blame presidents for the mistakes of congress. When things go right it´s always accredited to congress, when thing go wrong it´s always blamed on the president. It really doesn´t make any difference which political party they belong to.
Greg and I were discussing the pros and cons of the stimulus package. In my opinion any money the government gives back to the tax payers is a plus. Greg on the other hand wanted to go deeper, he ask why and by what authority the government has to pass out money to the public. Neither stimulus nor welfare is written into the constitution.
Greg pointed out and rightly so men like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers, Harlan Sanders, Dave Thomas, Bob Evens. Sam Walton and J C Penny to name a few didn´t need to government handout [stimulus] to improve the nation economy. They made a difference by taking an idea and working on it until it was a national success. The question Greg asked that I couldn´t answer was if they were going to give $ 600 per person back a month later why did they take it in the first place?
Both Greg and I know it will take his generation to bring sanity back into government. He and his generation must clean up what my generation screwed up. I wish them luck!
