Senator Perata joined housing and transportation advocates and local officials at the Bay Area Rapid Transit´s MacArthur Station today to discuss the importance of the projects for Oakland residents.
"Building residences close to transit hubs, such as MacArthur Station, is a smart way to increase affordable housing, reduce traffic congestion and combat climate change," Perata said. "Voters approved the Rebuild California bonds to improve the economy and enhance the quality of life, and that´s exactly what these projects will do."
Senator Perata helped write the five "Rebuild California" measures that voters passed in 2006. The package provides $37.2 billion in bond money to build schools, levees, roads, housing and other important infrastructure to keep California´s economy competitive.
Last week, Perata shepherded legislation through the Senate to spend $300 million more in Prop 1B and Prop 1C money this year to provide a shot in the arm to the construction industry. The measure, AB 1252 by Assembly Member Anna Marie Caballero (D-Salinas), appropriates $150 million statewide for infill housing and transit-oriented development, such as the MacArthur Transit Village.
The bill also provides $150 million in Prop B funding, with $87 million for street and road improvements in every California county, and $63 million for projects that enhance the flow of freight or improve safety where streets and railroads cross.
