700,000 SEIU Workers Endorse John Garamendi for Congress
SACRAMENTO, CA – Citing his lifelong support for working families as a California legislator, Insurance Commissioner and Lieutenant Governor, SEIU California State Council today announced its endorsement of John Garamendi to represent California's 10th Congressional District in the United States Congress.
"Working families know we can count on John Garamendi to stand up for us in Congress, because he's been fighting for our health care, our home care and our kids' future for more than thirty years," said Courtni Pugh, Executive Director of SEIU´s California State Council.
"I am very happy that my work to improve education, health care, employment conditions and wages is recognized by California's largest labor union." said Lt. Governor Garamendi. "This is particularly important because the U.S. Department of Labor today showed another 350,000 Americans lost their jobs in June. I've always strived for creating new job opportunities in California and today's endorsement reflects that."
"With health care reform, affordable clean energy, and economic security for our nation's families at the top of Congress' agenda, we need leaders in congress who will be a powerful voice for working families in each of these important debates," said Pugh. "We know that John Garamendi will do just what he's done in California -- be an outspoken champion for people who work hard every day, for the elderly and people with disabilities who need a voice, for parents and their kids who deserve opportunities for a better future. We know John Garamendi won't compromise our grandparents' safety or our kids' future."
"SEIU´s 700,000 nurses, janitors, health care and home care workers will be fighting to elect John Garamendi as our Congressman, just as he's stood up to fight for us," concluded Pugh.
Over 700,000 Californians make up SEIU in California. Working throughout the state, in all 58 counties, SEIU represents California in all of its diversity. SEIU members are social workers, nurses, classroom aides, security officers, college professors, homecare workers, janitors, and more.
