Tiburcio Vazquez Workers Approve New Contract

Labor Desk
Three-year agreement features pay increases and benefit improvements.

HAYWARD – Employees who work at the Tiburcio Vazquez Health Clinics overwhelmingly voted to approve a new contract today. The vote, which was 94 to 1, comes after a strong unity campaign among the SEIU-UHW members, which included a candle-light community vigil and a one-day strike, and led to successful negotiations with management.

"Tiburcio Vazquez workers are proud of the work we do and we are proud of this new contract," said Nicki Brito, who works at the Hayward clinic and serves on the SEIU-UHW Bargaining Committee. "Management listened to our concerns and responded in a productive way – and that is why we voted to approve the new deal."

The new three-year contract delivers significant gains for the workers and comes after a strong unity campaign. Among its provisions, the contract includes:

14 dollar/hour minimum wage for all workers

Market adjustments from 3% to 20% for recruitment and retention

Cost-of-living allowances of 3% in Year 1, 2% in Year 2 and 2% in Year 3

The addition of a new step to our pay scale to reward long-term employees

Improvements on educational leave

Management commitment to a collaborative process to create a bilingual pay differential

Tiburcio Vazquez Health Clinics Inc. (www.tvhc.org) operates five facilities in Southern Alameda. The new contract goes into effect immediately and will be in place until 2012.
