Book Review: "Defeating The Totalitarian Lie: A Hitler Youth Warns America"

Bruce Collins
"Defeating The Totalitarian Lie: A Hitler Youth Warns America" by Hilmar Von Campe is a sobering look at the bleakness of life and culture of death within Nazi Germany and shines like a torch as bright and as threatening as the one Paul Revere once saw.

Hilmar Von Campe wrote "How Was It Possible?" in 2006. In his book, he wanted to explain why Germany allowed a madman like Adolph Hitler to rise to power and to persecute the Jews.

However, since the publication of that book, Hilmar felt that current events demanded that he expand on his work. From his life experiences, the author understood the frightening correlation between Nazi Germany and the erosion of freedom in the United States. So, his new book is a look back at the extreme socialist agenda in Germany (taken from "How Was It Possible?") and a look forward at the increasing extreme socialist agenda in the United States.

Hilmar grew up in Germany during this tumultuous period under the shadow of Adolph Hitler. Subsequently, he was forced into the Hitler Youth organization at an early age. Meetings were usually twice a week and the youth had to sing Nazi propaganda songs. He saw within his family a split in ideology, between pro- and anti-Nazi, that became so hateful that conversation was avoided.

Hitler had a obsession for cruel treatment of his fellow citizens to drive out what he termed as ´weakness.´

He once stated," Weakness must be hammered away. In my castles of Teutonic Order, a youth will grow up and the world will tremble. I want a brutal domineering, fearless, cruel youth. Youth must be all that. It must bear pain. There must be nothing weak and gentle about it. The free, splendid beast of prey must once again flash from its eyes… That is how I will eradicate thousands of years of human domestication… That is how I will create the New Order."

Von Campe describes the persecution of the Jews in detail. At a young age, Hilmar witnessed the initial and subtle marginalization of the Jews. For instance, laws were passed which discouraged Germans to buy from Jewish merchants. Businesses owned by Jews were forced into bankruptcy. The author recalled, with regret, that the churches in Germany were silent to the treatment of this segment of the population.

At the beginning of World War II, the Von Campe family led a relatively normal life: going to school, having vacations and spending time together as families do.

In 1943, Hilmar entered military service and explains his active duty which involved intense combat. As he points out, most of them hated the Nazis but still took orders from their superiors. With this in mind, Hilmar looks back and honestly recognizes that most Germans were guilty of the crime of silence.

By this time, the persecution of the Jews was at the height of its´ most evil form. Hilmar points out that it was the indifference of the German citizens that allowed this mass execution of life, even though most of them would not know about the death camps until after the War.

"Defeating The Totalitarian Lie" dissects Nazi Germany and finds that Godlessness was directly responsible for the savagery and demise of a once great nation. Von Campe touches on a lot of details of the war, including the conspiratorial attempts to internally overtake the military as depicted in the movie, ´Valkyrie.´

Von Campe also writes about the major players of Nazi Germany. From this standpoint, "Defeating The Totalitarian Lie" serves as a great historical piece, told firsthand by a Hitler youth turned German soldier.

Great suffering fell upon the author´s family as the War came to an end. Von Campe describes the sad fate of his father at the hands of the Soviet military. Hilmar, too, became a prisoner and describes his heroic escape.

What makes this book so unique is the fact that Hilmar Von Campe draws parallels to the current condition of the United States. It is his eyewitness ´testimony´ that gives the reader a clear understanding that the West is closer to the edge of totalitarianism than many would otherwise believe.

He sounds an alarm on the mass executions that occur today in the United States. These staggering 50 million plus abortions have happened on a large scale to the indifference of the ´average´ American.

As the author correctly points out, the ACLU is an organization that has done tremendous harm to freedom ( the rights of the unborn, religious expression, etc). He is amazed (as we all should be) that this socialist, anti-American group is able to fund itself with taxpayer money.

Again, Hilmar shows the growing Godlessness in the United States by pointing out the court system and their refusal to use Constitutional and Judeo-Christian law to guide their decisions.

How far are we to becoming the next Nazi Germany? Not very far if we are to believe Hilmar Von Campe´s compelling evidence. With each disturbing news event and political agenda that Mr. Von Campe exposes, we see a clearer picture of an agenda that appears to be making serious inroads in the destruction of American sovereignty.

This book is well worth your time and will wake you up to the tragic events that are alarming those who have the point of view to see that history, unfortunately, does repeat itself.
