SUPERSTAR AUSTRALIAN CROWNED PRINCE IN VENTURA COUNTY!
For ballet director and famed choreographer Rodney Gustafson, it took an airplane trip from Los Angeles to New York to find just the right prince to suit his Cinderella, dancer Jennifer Rowe.
Gustafson, currently the artistic director of the State Street Ballet in Santa Barbara, designed and produced Cinderella, The Ballet. Recently he auditioned dancers at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theater (ABT) in New York City, on behalf of the Ventura County Ballet Company where 18-year old Aaron Smyth captured his attention.
While Rowe has yet to meet her Prince Charming, she says it will be funny after all this excitement, when the two finally meet for the first time at rehearsals on May 27.
The production features Gustafson´s signature work marrying costumes, scenery, choreography, lighting, video and high-tech digital special effects that transports the audience to another world -- including a rags to riches transformation of Cinderella.
"I tell my story in a shorter amount of time – there is no pageantry, but there is humor, and strong character development as the story unfolds," Gustafson says. "Many consider the step-sisters, played by professional dancers Sergei Dormrachev and John Christopher Piel, to be a humorous highlight."
Rowe describes Gustafson´s work as thrilling and difficult. "Rodney does not like transitions, so we dance for sustained passages that are brilliant and demanding," she says. "He (Gustafson) manages each scene incorporating every nuance into a seamless journey for the audience."
The remaining cast of Cinderella, The Ballet will be comprised of students from Kathleen Noblin´s school, Ballet Academy Ventura, including Oxnard High School student Hailley Goleta who will dance the lead role of the Fairy Godmother.
