The Notre Dame Protests Are Working

Christian Church
A group of 19 demonstrators were arrested Saturday at Notre Dame during a protest over the University's decision to invite President Obama to speak to graduates and receive an honorary degree. None of the protesters arrested were students and they included former Republican presidential candidate Alan Keyes, who has a daughter who is openly homosexual.

The group is protesting over President Obama's support of the U.S. Supreme Courtīs 1973 decision to give women reproductive choice. Obama, who was born in Hawaii in 1961, was 12-years-old at the time of the Courtīs decision.

The group says that the Catholic Church does not allow abortion and that inviting the President to speak at the Catholic university runs counter to Church teaching. But the Catholic Church likewise opposes the death penalty and Notre Dame asked pro-death penalty President George W. Bush to speak at previous commencements. In fact, according to sources while Governor of Texas Bush presided over more executions than any other executive in United States History, including executions of the mentally retarded.

Where were the protesters during President Bush's commencement address at the University of Notre Dame? Nowhere, because the protesters are hypocrites.

Let's face the facts we all know about recent history. President Bush is a Republican who lost the popular vote to Democrat Al Gore in 2000. As a consequence, Bush was never considered a legitimately elected president. On top of that, Bush lied to the America people about the need to go to war in Iraq, where thousands of young soldiers sacrificed their lives or came home severely crippled. Bush and the Republicans are also responsible for causing the worst economic and financial disaster the world has seen since the Great Depression.

In contrast, Barack Obama, the first African American President elected, won the popular vote overwhelmingly and continues to enjoy enormous approval ratings nationwide. Leave it to the Democrats to elect the first Black man President of the United States. And leave it to the Republicans to "want him to fail" even during a time of war and global economic crisis.

So the protests this weekend at the University of Notre Dame are really not about the sanctity of life. Instead, the protests are motivated for political purposes by Republicans who are desperate and unhappy with the direction their party has taken and the rapid decline in their membership as the "party faithful" reject the GOP to become new Democrats. For example, the Democratic Party now holds enormous majorities of registered voters in over 70% of the states and holds vast majorities in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Democrats also hold immense majorities in over 65% of state legislatures and the majority of Governorships.

So let the Republicans protest the Commander-in-Chief during a time of war and continue to get arrested. Their deceitful activities will only drive still more moderate Republicans away from the partly, making the GOP increasingly irrelevant. To be sure, the increase in Democratic Party registrations is due to a widespread rejection of Republican Party extremists – like those at Notre Dame – who through their hypocrisy - attempt to impose their twisted religious beliefs on others, marginalizing gays, and restrict a womanīs right to choose.

These Right-Wing extremists remaining in the dwindling GOP cannot be taken seriously.
