Motor Day traffic enforcement in Chula Vista Today
In conjunction with Motor Day, the City of Chula Vista is currently engaged in a pedestrian and bicyclist safety campaign aimed at reducing the number of "pedestrian involved collisions." As part of this campaign CVPD officers will be actively enforcing pedestrian laws in addition to the vehicle code laws for motorists involving pedestrian rights.
From January of 2004 to June of 2008 in Chula Vista:
Pedestrian Related Collisions:
294 pedestrian collisions, accounting for 4% of all collisions (7,601).
276 pedestrian injury collisions; 7% of all injury collisions (4,157).
11 of 32 fatal collisions (34%) involved a pedestrian; nationally; pedestrian deaths make up 25 to 40 percent of traffic fatalities.
Collision Causes:
Vehicle drivers are at-fault in 61% of the collisions, and pedestrians in 33%.
When drivers are at fault two-thirds of the time they are making a turn, 34% right turns and 31% left turns.
In 81 of the 96 cases (84%) where pedestrians are at fault, it was because they darted into the roadway in front of a vehicle. Forty-two percent (34) of these cases involved children from 5 to 15 years old.
