When entertaining guests, it is important to know how to set a table properly. A well-appointed table looks attractive, makes dining easy and convenient, and shows your guests that you care about small details. Follow these tips for a perfectly set table every time:

1. Place your centerpiece in the middle of the table. Be sure that it is not so tall that it will block conversation from one side of the table to the other. Add a tapered candle to each side of the centerpiece, lighting the candles if desired.

2. Place the plates on the table. A good rule of thumb is to put each plate about two feet from the next one. You don´t want your guests to feel crowded.

3. Put flatware at each setting. Knives go on the right, with their blades facing the plate. Spoons go to the right of the knives. Forks belong on the left of the plate and napkins go to the left of the forks. If you have more than one fork or spoon, put the first fork or spoon to be used toward the outside of the setting. For example, salad forks should go to the left of dinner forks, and dessert forks should go to the right of dinner forks. Soupspoons go to the right of dessertspoons.

4. Place cups or glasses above the knives on the right side of the dinner plate. Place bread or salad plates above the forks on the left side of the dinner plate. You may put a butter knife on the bread plate as well.

Tips

If you prefer, you can leave dessert silverware off the table and simply bring those utensils out with dessert.

If you have more than one glass (for example, a wine glass and a water glass), place the water glass behind and slightly to the left of the wine glass.

It is a good idea to remove utensils from the table after each course. This will reduce clutter on the table and make it less likely that your linens will get stained.
