Elusive peace in Middle East

Joe Fleishman
U.S. Special Envoy to Middle East George Michael is now visiting the area for a new round peace talks. Mr. Michael is visiting a number of states to negotiate the peace deal with Israel. U.S. is continuing their effort for a long lasting peace in Middle East which ultimately leads to two country solution.

However, till now Israel has denies to agree one of the important issue expansion Israeli settlement. On the other hand Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas rebuff any peace talk until Israel stops its settlement growth. So there is a deadlock in peace process.

After Benjamin Netanyahu forms the government he was reluctant to comply on two country solution. But U.S. and its allies pressure made Israel to back down from its stand. Still another major issue Israeli settlement is seems to have a hard nut to crack.

Previously Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has rejected a freeze on settlement building, saying "natural growth" must be allowed. While Palestinian leaders have also refused to meet their Israeli counterparts until settlement activity ceases.

This settlement issue is peculiar and totally contradicts with Israeli claim they are on side of peace. It is not difficult to understand Israeli intention why they are expanding their settlement. May be they are up to capturing more land before reaching two country solution. Naturally this annoys Palestinians. Here the Israeli rule is they can expand as far they want but Palestinian settlement cannot exceed the boundary wall. In no argument anyone cant support this paradoxical nature.

For Israel there is another issue concerns. Iran they consider as their one of the biggest threat. So Michael´s one target was to assure Israel about Iran. But up till now none of these efforts are giving optimum result as Israel is yet to comply on freezing its advance in settlement building.

Another fact is, Middle East peace doesn´t mean only Israel-Palestinian peace. Israel - Syria, Israel – Lebanon etc. is also included in the whole Middle East peace. But in no front Israel gain any respect or trust. They are like a quarrelsome neighbor in Middle East neighborhood. Israel seems more interested in keeping the tension rather than soothe it.

New round of peace process begins in this backdrop. After meeting with Syrian president Bashar Al Asad, George Michael said their discussion was positive and he was optimistic. Later Michael also talked with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Middle East peace process is one of the long running peace efforts in the world. Yet the real achievement from the years long peace process is so tiny that can barely noticeable. This is really very frustrating. After nearly twenty years since it first begins, no one knows how many more years it will take to implement the dream of a peace in that region.
