Dry Conditions Feed California Wildfires
As of late Saturday, the Lockheed fire in Santa Cruz County covered 10 square miles while a fire burning in the Los Padres National Forest had burned more than 84,000 acres, CNN reported.
The Los Padres fire was believed sparked by a cooking fire at an illegal marijuana camp run by a Mexican drug gang, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Narcotics Unit said Saturday night.
The suspects were believed to be in the area, trying to leave on foot, investigators said.
The cause of the fire in Santa Cruz County was under investigation Saturday as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger visited the area and was briefed on the fire, said Julie Hutchinson, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
About 300 homes were threatened in the Swanton and Bonny Doon communities with the area under a state of emergency Saturday.
The "outlook is still a little stressful," Hutchinson said.
