On the menu today: Tasty ribs and a large side of support for local nonprofits
(OXNARD, CA – Sept. 1, 2009) Since the opening of Smokey´s House of BBQ in Oxnard in March, founder Mike Christian has taken his passion for barbecue and support for the local community to a whole new level.
"We believe serving the local community is more than just great food," Christian said. "It's about people helping people and we are proud to support many organizations in Ventura County, including the local chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Ventura County food bank Food Share, the Military Families Food Bank on our local Naval base and helping foster families and children through Aspiranet in Ventura."
Christian said there is no second thought to supporting local charities, especially with the economy and budget cuts many programs have faced.
"We really do appreciate what these organizations have done for the Ventura County community," he said. "So many charities need help, and it is up to local business to step in and be a part of changing lives," he said.
A total of four fundraisers were hosted at the restaurant culminating in over $5,000 in donations.
"It is critical that programs serving foster children, like Aspiranet, receive the support of businesses and their customers to keep the services viable," said Art Chaparro, Aspiranet Director of Development. "Partners like Smokey´s House of Barbecue are an example of what businesses can do to contribute to our community and its future."
"I believe in taking care of our own, especially our military families, who do so much for our country," said Matilda "Tilly" Ahearn, who founded the nonprofit military food bank at the Port Hueneme Naval Base 28 years ago. "Mike helped us to replenish the food pantry for our military families and we all appreciate his support."
