MAYOR NEWSOM APPLAUDS SECOND ANNUAL OUTSIDE LANDS MUSIC FESTIVAL

San Francisco, CA—An estimated 100,000 people flocked to Golden Gate Park this weekend to attend the second annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival. Music fans from throughout the Bay Area and the country attended the festival to see bands like Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Modest Mouse and the Black Eyed Peas.

The event not only generated approximately $1,000,000 for the Recreation and Parks Department, but filled City restaurants and hotels over the weekend.

"In two short years, Outside Lands has quickly become both a part of the cultural fiber of San Francisco and a tremendous boon to our local businesses," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. "Another Planet Entertainment and the City have partnered to create an event that supports the City´s restaurants and hotels while strengthening San Francisco´s

reputation as a cultural icon. Martha Cohen, Director of Special Events for the City & County of San Francisco, also deserves enormous credit for all of her hard work in making this event a success."

In the months before the event and throughout the festival itself, City departments and staff from the promoter, Another Planet Entertainment, communicated closely to ensure that the event operated smoothly and that attendees remained safe. While most concertgoers embodied the peaceful spirit of the festival, effective communication between event promoters and city departments added to that spirit and resulted in a nearly incident-free event.

SFMTA transported tens of thousands of people to and from the event and Recreation and Park Department staff closely monitored the festival site to ensure the protection of the park itself.

Throughout the weekend, a sound consultant retained by the City and promoter responded to sound complaints and made recommendations on how to limit the impact on the surrounding community. These efforts resulted in a daily reduction of sound complaints received by the concert´s community hotline of nearly two-thirds between Friday and Sunday. In the coming weeks, the sound consultant will review the data collected and help the City develop goals for future events in Golden Gate Park.

Over the next few days, stages will be disassembled, equipment packed up and the park cleaned. Dozens of volunteers from Clean Vibes and the San Francisco Conservation Corp are contributing their time to ensure that the park is clean and to sort recyclable items. By the end of the day on Wednesday, the entire site will be reopened for all to enjoy.

"It was breathtaking to see tens of thousands of people, many first-time visitors to Golden Gate Park, enjoying the crown jewel of our city´s park system," said Phil Ginsburg Recreation and Park Director. "While the revenue generated will certainly assist us in this time of need, the highlight of this event was the sea of people who spent their weekend in our beautiful park."
