The "On the House" Normalization With Israel!
Unfortunately, Benjamin Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of Israel, is one of such politicians whom you cannot trust or deal with, that is mainly because he is simply an opportunist; a doubled face man who wants to get political gains on the expense of others; a kind of a Machiavellian who believes that ‘the end justify the means.’
After his meeting with President Mubarak of Egypt, a few days ago, and his assurances and commitments to peace, he came up with disappointing statements on September 14th that “building in Jerusalem will continue as normal” contradicting his own pledges and guarantees to Obama, Mitchell and Mubarak to work towards peace.
The ironic thing about Netanyahu is that he thought that he could put the ball in Obama’s court when he asked him to pressurize the Arabs to normalize their relations with Israel in exchange for temporary freezing of the Israeli settlement in the occupied territories in Palestine, the very settlements that are actually illegal under the international law!
Who can buy this Mr. Netanyahu? While you go on building the illegal settlements on the occupied territories, and endangering the “Aqsa” Mosque in Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam, by the continuous and aggressive excavation under it and with the complete seizure on the Palestinians, especially in Gaza, making them live in what can be described as the biggest prison ever known, and yet you want the Arabs to come to you with flowers congratulating you on your heroic steps towards peace and normalization!
Mr. Netanyahu thinks that he can survive his term, all along, with two faces, one with the extreme wing groups in his government by continuing the settlements and refusing a viable Palestinian State, and the other with the moderates in Israel and the rest of the world where he could show a man of peace and commitment! I doubt if he can succeed in doing so. It is just a matter of time before a real clash between him and the international community, particularly the US, EU and Egypt, takes place, where things will become more complex.
Also, the attempts by Israel to shift the attention towards Iran wouldn’t work because the current administration in the US is more tactful and it involves the international community in the Iranian issue effectively so as to avoid showing it as a US-Iran conflict and promoting it, instead, to be an international issue. On the other side of the picture, the more Israel pressurizes the world towards the Iranian nuclear program the more her own nuclear arsenal comes to the surface, the very thing, as I believe, that Israel does not want to occur.
Netanyahu’s government cannot also use Hezbollah or Hamas as reasons for hindering peace because both are weaker than ever, and the Arab street has shifted dramatically from the blind support to them and started questioning their credibility and real purposes, besides that it has to be understood that the current Israeli government’s actions and violation of international law give both Hamas and Hezbollah good materials for their propaganda.
I would end my article with a serious question to those who are obsessed by Israel’s security and very existence:
What will happen if we wake up one day and find the “Aqsa” Mosque, the third holiest shrine for 1.5 billion Muslims, demolished as a result of the continuous digging?
I am honestly horrified by the answer, my self !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
