Los Angeles County Democratic Party Files Amicus Brief Supporting Lawsuit Challenging Governor

Political Desk
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) today announced the filing of amicus curiae in support of litigation challenging Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger´s unconstitutional reductions in critical healthcare and other safety net programs (St. John´s Well Child and Family Center et al., v. Schwarzenegger and Chiang, California Court of Appeal, First Appellate District, Division Two).

The California Democratic Party Platform states that the Democratic Party is committed to "lifting at-risk families and working poor families out of poverty so they can become independent and lead self-sufficient lives" and "upholding…our State Constitution." The amicus brief upholds this commitment.

"LACDP stands with victims of these heartless actions and joins Senator Steinberg, Speaker Bass, members of the Legislature, local government officials and non-government organizations in the belief that these illegal reductions put the lives of those most dependant on our government at great risk. It is imperative that the courts take immediate action to enjoin these devastating cuts," said Eric C. Bauman, LACDP Chair.

The amicus brief includes declarations from real people and organizations that depend on the public funding that the Governor has illegally cut – including victims of domestic violence, homeless families, and women with HIV/AIDS.

The amicus brief is attached to this press release and is available on the LACDP website at www.lacdp.org.
