City´s Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence Reminds Us: It Can Happen To Anyone
San Jose, CA - The City of San José´s Family/Domestic Violence Advisory Board will host the City of San José´s 12th Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence on Friday, October 2, 2009. This year´s message serves as a reminder that domestic abuse can happen to anyone.
"Domestic violence impacts families in every neighborhood, rich and poor, across our city," said Mayor Chuck Reed. "Last year, the San Jose Police Department received nearly 3,000 domestic violence calls – more than the total for homicide, robbery and rape. It´s time to take a stand. We want your help in ending domestic violence."
Actress, author, and survivor of domestic violence Robin Givens will be the featured speaker of this event. Givens will describe her experience as a victim of domestic violence and share how this issue can be intergenerational, including in her own family. She documented much of her experience in her memoir, Grace Will Lead Me Home. Givens will discuss how she came to be in an abusive relationship, her escape from it, and how she transformed her life following the years of abuse.
The program will begin at 11:00 a.m. (registration starts at 10:30 a.m.) in the West Plaza area in front of San José City Hall. The program will include a victim´s tribute and remarks by a survivor of domestic violence. Vice Mayor Judy Chirco, Councilmember Nora Campos, and Councilmember Pete Constant, City Manager Debra Figone, and District Attorney Dolores Carr will participate in the program.
The City´s 12th Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence begins at City Hall, continues down Fourth Street, past the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, up San Fernando to Market past the Plaza de Cesar Chavez, and then back down the Downtown Paseos to Third Street. The 1.8-mile route culminates with a Community Lunch and Resource Fair in the San José City Hall Rotunda and Plaza areas.
According to the Santa Clara County Death Review Committee, there have been eight domestic violence related deaths in Santa Clara County in 2009 to date, although these deaths only represent two separate episodes of domestic violence. The City´s Family Violence Center reviews 5,000 domestic violence, stalking, and threat management related reports annually.
There is no cost to participate in the Walk and it will be open to the public; it will be held rain or shine. This year´s Walk to End Domestic Violence is sponsored by the City of San José, County of Santa Clara, San José Police Officers Association, Santa Clara County Cities Association, Paradise Sweets Balloons and Gifts, and NBC Bay Area 11.
