THE RETURN OF POLVO: IN PRISM AND ON NOISEVOX
New York, NY - NOISEVOX – As one of the more beloved indie rock bands of the Nineties, you had to figure that the return of Polvo would be a cause for celebration. Only, the band wasn´t so sure. "We had no idea what the response would be," says Polvo bassist Steve Popson, on this week´s installment of the web series Noisemakers on Noisevox. "It´s been really encouraging to see people still caring and still listening." Plenty are listening, as the North Carolina prog math noise stalwarts tour the country in support of In Prism, their first album in twelve years, one that more than a few pundits have called the band´s finest to date – no small praise.
That album is one of the topics covered in Polvo´s conversation with Noisemakers´ John Norris. Even though the songs on the record are lengthy, guitarist Ash Bowie says, "I do think it´s more focused and more streamlined" than past efforts. As for why the Polvo return happened now, Popson explains it essentially came down to time. Time to practice for last year´s reunion show, at All Tomorrow´s Parties Minehead in England ("We needed every minute of those six months they gave us to get ready"), and an adequate studio schedule ("This was the first time we actually had a good chunk of time to work on a record").
Whatever the formula, Polvo has hardly missed a step. Judge for yourself, in four true-to-form, jagged and bruising songs taken from last week´s performance at the Bell House in Brooklyn, New York. Included from In Prism are album opener "Right The Relation" and the hard charging single "Beggar´s Bowl", along with Polvo classics "Feather of Forgiveness" and "Fast Canoe". Exciting times for fans of Polvo. Will they last? We´ll see. Bowie tells Norris, "We´re just enjoying what it is, for now." Adds Popson, "We know we´re doing it through the end of the year."
