Edwards Air Force Base Celebrates Sixty Seven Years of Flight Testing

California Desk
Sacramento- Senator Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield) congratulates the personnel of Edwards Air Force base for 67 years of being the premiere flight test facility in the United States and the world. To mark the occasion and the 50th Anniversary of the X-15 program, the Air Force will put on a spectacular air show and aircraft exhibits on October 17th.

Dubbed "Flight Test Nation 2009," the event will be free and open to the public and will be held at the sprawling air base. State and federal officials will also attend to honor its historic legacy and the active duty personnel of Edwards.

The base´s West and North Gates will be open to the public beginning 7 a.m., though attendees will not be permitted to stay on base overnight.

There will also be displays of aircraft from the past as well as the latest in the Air Force inventory. The air show will include the U.S. Army´s Golden Knights parachute team, Tora! Tora! Tora!, and America´s most advanced stealth aircraft, the F-22 Raptor. Tora! Tora! Tora! is the name of the civilian Commemorative Air Force flight team that recreates the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The flight team uses authentic aircraft from the era for their show and their motto is "Lest we forget." They were founded in 1972 and are all unpaid volunteers. Since their founding, they have performed in numerous air shows throughout the western hemisphere to critical acclaim.

Edwards Air Force base is located in California´s 18th Senate District which has been proudly represented by Senator Ashburn since 2002.

Air show attendees may bring with them folding chairs, hand held umbrellas and small lunchbox sized coolers. However, they may not bring any kind of weapon, illegal drugs, glass bottles or large coolers.
