SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Today Mayor Gavin Newsom kicked off Fleet Week 2009 with Edward Leonard, Chairman of the San Francisco Fleet Week Committee, Commander Greg McWherter of the Blue Angels, and Charles Dubs, Regional Manager of CVS/Pharmacy Caremark Corporation.

"San Francisco has a history as a Navy town and is proud to welcome and honor the men and women of the Armed Forces," said Mayor Newsom. "Fleet Week gives visitors and military personnel the chance to explore our wonderful city, tour our amazing landmarks, and enjoy its beauty and fine dining."

Each year, 1.2 million locals and visitors flock to the waterfront to watch the Fleet Week ships and Blue Angels air show. This year´s air show includes performances by the United States Navy´s Blue Angels, Team Oracle, United States Coast Guard, Patriots, Chevron´s Julie Clark, and Geico´s Tim Weber. Ship tours are available on the HMCS Edmonton, HMCS Brandon, HMCS Whitehorse, USS Green Bay, CGC Boutwell, and SS Jeremiah O´Brien.

Since congestion in the Marina will be heavy this weekend, CVS/Pharmacy is sponsoring rides on Muni. The F-Line will be free for riders all day Saturday and Sunday.

Fleet Week originated in 1908 when President Theodore Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet" visited our City. It has been a San Francisco annual tradition since 1981 when then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein established it as a city celebration. Since 1981, it has been an annual opportunity for Northern Californians to honor the men and women serving in the United States Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, as well as international navies.
