Why Are We in Afghanistan

Jann Burner
I finally have to admit it. I just don't understand our foreign policy in relation to Afghanistan and Iraq. At first I thought it was weapons of mass destruction and then I thought it was Bin Laden that we were after and then I thought it was the Oil! But to actually get Bin Laden all we would need would be a squad on the ground and a couple of weaponized drone airplanes. No need for multiple thousands of "boots on the ground", as they like to say. You don't go deer hunting with an entire high school graduating class! And if it IS the oil we are after, hey, don't look now but between Alaska and the Montana, Calgary, Canada area we already have MORE oil than they do! So, really, what is the deal. Why are we burning billions of non-existent American dollars in the sand of the Near East? What IS the big threat that is breaking us financially and costing the deaths and amputated lives of thousands of Americans? I admit it. I don't get it. We aren't fighting communism any more. We aren't fighting the Russians, the cold war is over. Are we really over there simply to try and export democracy and cell-phones, a credit card economy and Dish TV to a tribal culture thousands of years old? Is that what we are doing? Are they not allowing McDonald's into the country?

That area has been an advanced tribal culture since long before Jesus was a small child. It was once the cradle of civilization. We got the alphabet from them! We have already received more from that part of the world than we could EVER pay back. Why can't we simply leave them in peace? Of course we may want to lay down a couple of rules.

First: Do NOT export terrorism under the guise of the Muslim religion. There are many faces to religion on this planet. It isn't a competition. There will be no winners. Let everyone pay their respects to their maker in whatever fashion they choose. Secondly, take care of your own Bad guys. You allow them to come and mess with us and we will put boots on the ground and upset your entire day.

So is that what we are doing? Is this all still just pay back for 911 and the other acts of terror around the world? If so, then why not do what the Israeli´s did after terrorists killed their athletes at the Olympics. They didn't randomly pick a Near Eastern country and go to war. Nope. They assembled a small group, gave them essentially unlimited funds and said, "This is your new job". Until you are successful, die or retire, you will do nothing but hunt down these specific terrorists and when you find them you will immediately send them off to their maker. No big deal. End of story. Within a couple of years it was accomplished. They even made a movie about it.
