SWEET TREATS: Trick Or Treat So Others Can Eat program kicks off Oct. 19 in Ventura County
When the TOTSOCE program started Coverly took her then two year-old daughter, Kimberly, trick-or-treating to collect food. Now 15, Kimberly has become very involved in the program. As the 4-H Teen Leader for TOTSOCE, she is responsible for coordinating and registering participants in the program, and creating and maintaining an excel spread sheet for tracking the amount of food collected.
"I started out pulling my little red wagon going door-to-door asking for donations with my mom," said Kimberly Coverly. "Now, I see that through TOT SOCE I am benefiting the county and having an impact on the people around me. I am encouraging everyone to get involved. When I have a Halloween party, I ask all of the guests to bring canned food to get in and I encourage my friends to do the same. Every little bit helps."
"We are so pleased and proud of Kimberly´s efforts in spearheading this year´s trick or treat program," said Bonnie Weigel, CEO of FOOD Share. "The program has continued to grow and many other youth clubs and community organizations now participate in TOTSOCE. Help from the community is so important in the fight against hunger."
Volunteers for TOTSOCE collect cans of food and other non-perishable food items to benefit FOOD Share, Ventura County´s regional food bank, to help feed more than 40,000 people each month in Ventura County. Participation from local youth groups, clubs, church groups, service organizations, schools, sports groups, families, and individuals, is encouraged.
"The beauty of this program is that it is so easy to do, yet it really makes a difference," Lynnette said. "After registering through the website, participants can print orange flyers and distribute them in their chosen area, then collect food anytime between Oct. 19 and Nov. 8. Last year, we even had organizations from out-of-state starting their own TOTSOCE program."
Donations can be dropped off at Ventura County Community West Bank locations at 951 Westlake Blvd. in Westlake Village and 1463 South Victoria Avenue in Ventura, or at FOOD Share´s warehouse at 4156 South Bank Road in Oxnard.
