Los Angeles - The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV) has endorsed Oscar Magaņa and Ed Varela for the Maywood City Council. The League also recently endorsed candidate Felipe Aguirre, an incumbent.

Magaņa, Varela and Aquirre are running in the upcoming November 3, 2009 election.

"Magaņa and Varela are part of a team of activists and community members dedicated to bringing clean potable water to Maywood, addressing the cumulative impacts of industry, and improving the overall quality of life for residents," said Mitchell Schwartz, President of LALCV. "We are pleased to support this impressive slate of committed candidates."

The City of Maywood is located in southeast Los Angeles, near the Los Angeles River and the 710 Freeway. Although Maywood is only one square mile in size, it is the densest city on the west coast with more than 30,000 residents.

The quality of City of Maywood's drinking water has long been a contentious issue. The city is surrounded by industry and sits in the long shadow of airborne pollutants from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and harbor-area petroleum and chemical plants. The 710 Freeway also contributes to diminished air quality.

Magaņa grew up in Maywood and sits on the Planning Commission and the Cumulative Impacts Commission. He is a physical education teacher and has created volunteer programs for the community's youth. Varela is a member of the Comite Maywood Unido and has been active in fighting the construction of schools on contaminated ground.

"LALCV is excited to see the possibility of a City Council in Maywood made up strong environmental leaders," said Schwartz. "At last environmental health problems can be addressed."

Just this week, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law AB 890, which empowers the City of Maywood to seek involvement from the State Department of Health in reviewing water quality provided by Maywood water companies, a victory for city council members endorsing Magaņa and Varela.

The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters is dedicated to endorsing and supporting candidates who are committed to preserve, protect and enhance the environment throughout Los Angeles County. Throughout its 20 year history LALCV has helped elect more than 100 environmental leaders to local offices throughout Los Angeles County.
