Los Angeles - The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV) has endorsed Andre Quintero as the next Mayor of El Monte. Quintero is running for Mayor in the upcoming November 3, 2009 election.

"Andre impressed the LALCV board with his knowledge of environmental issues and his commitment to helping the City of El Monte through its current major fiscal crisis," said Mitchell Schwartz, President of the LALCV Board. "We are pleased to be able to support his candidacy."

Quintero has served as a Trustee at the Rio Hondo Community College District since 2001. He is also a criminal prosecutor for the City of Los Angeles. For the past eight years, Quintero has been working to increase the number of students transferring from Rio Hondo to four year universities. He has also been involved in launching a program to modernize the campus and to adopt green building design standards.

El Monte is in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley bordered by the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Rivers, in the heart of what is popularly known as the Emerald Necklace, a 17 mile loop of rivers, greenbelts, parks, wildlife habitat, bike paths and flood control areas in the San Gabriel Valley.

Quintero is supporting the establishment of an environmental commission for the City that would seek out information regarding green building design standards for developers. He believes the City also needs to review its waste hauling and recycling programs and its open space plan.

El Monte's fiscal problems are severe: the city has an unemployment rate of more than 14 percent and more than 70 percent of the population is making less than $50,000 a year.

Quintero would seek to establish a budget taskforce to address the immediate and long range impacts of the City's budget crisis, including the City's economic development plan and its plans for obtaining much-needed federal stimulus dollars.

The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters is dedicated to endorsing and supporting candidates who are committed to preserve, protect and enhance the environment throughout Los Angeles County. Throughout its 20 year history LALCV has helped elect more than 100 environmental leaders to local offices throughout Los Angeles County.
