The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Northeastern Minnesota is a magical place. Every year people flock to the BWCAW to canoe and camp in this primitive and unspoiled wilderness. Boundary Waters campsites dot the shorelines of secluded lakes that are only accessed by paddling and portaging the canoe country. There are no buildings or roads and cell phones don´t work there. The freshwater lakes of the boreal forest are so clean you can drink from them. Only a limited number of people can visit the BWCA each summer due to the wilderness permit system. If you are lucky enough to be able to take a Boundary Waters canoe camping trip then be sure take a kid along with you. Children need to reap the benefits of spending time in the great outdoors.

The wilderness of the Boundary Waters is the perfect place for children to spend time outside with nature. Away from their comfortable homes and unplugged from their normal life a child can play in an unstructured environment. There are no limits to what the imagination of children can create when in such a magical place as the BWCA. When children are outdoors without a pile of toys it forces them to play well with one another as they create their own rules and games. In the Boundary Waters Canoe Area they can safely play without any worries about the rest of the world.

A canoe camping trip in the BWCA provides the opportunity for children to exercise while outside. Paddling and portaging the canoe country is an enjoyable type of physical exertion that is new and exciting for most kids. Children do not receive the recommended amount of exercise or time spent outdoors in their normal life. While they are in the Boundary Waters they find themselves constantly in motion underneath the uninterrupted sky. Exercising helps prevent the all too common problem of obesity and diabetes that is facing today´s youth. The natural sunlight of the great outdoors is also beneficial as it provides kids with their daily dose of Vitamin D, something many children suffer a deficiency from. Combine the exercise and Vitamin D benefits of spending time outside and you have a very compelling reason to take children on your next BWCA canoe trip.

Introducing a child to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a great way to teach them the importance of wild and natural places. So many wonderful activities such as climbing, hiking, fishing, hunting, canoeing and camping cannot be achieved by staying indoors. There needs to be places where one can go to experience all the outdoor world can offer. If a child has never experienced such a place then it will be much more difficult for them to appreciate and care for the wilderness. The more removed people are from places like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness the more difficult it will be to preserve them for the future.

Children need to be introduced to the great outdoors at an early age so they continue to pursue it into their adulthood. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a place where children can use the full potential of their creative brains and active bodies. They can get the exercise they need and reap the many benefits of spending time outdoors. A canoe camping trip provides children with a unique opportunity to enhance their self-esteem and improve both their physical and mental health. Bring a child along on your next BWCAW canoe camping trip and enjoy the magical experience together.
