Life of A Tutor

Entrepreneurial leaders do not have a mindset that adapts to failure. Things go wrong, of course, but entrepreneurs don´t call them "failures" they call them "glitches, mistakes, bungles, setbacks" – but not failing.

When one such entrepreneur was asked about the hardest decision he ever had to make, he answered that he didn´t know what a hard decision was. An entrepreneur will approach decision-making with the idea that there´s a strong likelihood that he/she will be wrong. This doesn´t dissuade them – to the contrary they just do the best they can and worry about handling obstacles as they arise.

Here's a few entrepreneurs:

ABC's Tutoring Center is a local neighbourhood service provider for newly arrived immigrant students and adults who are looking for immediate help in the areas of basic literacy and communications in the English language. The center also provides assistance in various subjects and basic education to students and parents about the American Education System and how to work with the schools and teachers on a regular basis. We offer personalized tutorials, improving study skill sessions, and conversational English classes to adults on a daily basis as well. Our prices are at a minimal keeping in mind that newly immigrants cannot afford expensive tutoring prices. Our main goal is to help others succeed and learn the English language so they can independently benefit their lives and others who are affected by this void whom they come in to contact with regularly. On the same note, with today's competitive classroom structures, many students fail to learn or practice learning techniques that allow them to finish and successfully complete their assignments.

Today, teachers no longer have the time required to assist students individually in this particular area as in the past. The assumption is students should already know these techniques and they are responsible for doing them without have to be told repeatedly in class to do so. But the fact is students don't know the techniques nor ever learned such skills like taking notes, reading each chapter in their textbooks, memorizing vocabulary words, etc. Well, that's where tutoring centers like ours come into place, because we are able to individually sit with each student look at their strengths and weaknesses as our motto states 'strengthening skills one at a time' and help learn all if not most techniques required for advancement. This is the our primary setup and function of the work that happens everyday at ABC's Tutoring Center. We hope and believe that students who in come to our center, within matter of few months are able to learn and comprehend these techniques and are capable of independently working on their classwork and homework not needing further tutorials in the long run.

Melanie White is a certified teacher with over 15 years of experience teaching in both public and private schools. She also is an active tutor, helping students from age 3 to 73 learn everything from reading fundamentals to how to work the computer. She assists students in a wide variety of subjects, but the two most often requested are math and test preparation. Melanie says that being able to help individuals gain confidence in their academic abilities is one of the most rewarding things about being a teacher.

Melanie believes learning should be fun and tries to integrate games and humor into the learning process whenever possible. So many people associate studying with drudgery, and she believe that if they can actually look forward to learning something new, then it won't be such a struggle. Since learning is a life-long process, anybody can benefit from the knowledge and skills of people with more experience, and she hopes that she what she continues to learn will also benefit others and make their lives better.

What is tutoring? Tutoring is academic assistance provided in various mediums to supplement course instruction. Many colleges and universities offer tutoring in various capacities to their student clientele. However, at Cleveland State University, tutoring surpasses this ordinary definition. Provided at both a departmental level and as a centralized mechanism, the growth of the centralized tutoring program, TASC (Tutoring and Academic Success Center) has flourished this fall in proportion to the increasing student enrollment rate. Exceeding the spring semester contact hours by almost ten times the previously recorded totals, the number of registered and regularly attending students currently is 445. The unprecedented growth in this dynamic and instrumental student support service incurs the demand for increased student staffing, structured approaches to student sessions, enhanced tutor evaluation and development opportunities, and uncharted avenues to provide outreach to constituents at satellite campuses who cannot currently tap the existing services at the times and location provided. When asked the driving force behind the boom there are multiple proposals including increased staff, heightened campus visibility, blossoming student population, all of which contribute in some way. What keeps the students coming back for more(some whom have attended all semester) is simple: connection. Often feeling lost on the face of a large urban commuter campus, students are striving to find that place where they belong; a place where their fears of failing Math are recognized and their confidence is bolstered from a trusting and encouraging support person who not only knows their subject and how to approach learning, but their name (and sometimes the names of their family members, boyfriend, and pet). The rapport developed between tutor and student has led to the adoption of the popular Olive Garden slogan, "When you´re here, you´re family."

Entering the center, students are greeted by the piping hot aroma of freshly brewed coffee (provided through donations of tutor staff), lilting instrumental music accented with murmuring fountains, and the welcoming smiles of tutors who not only come in when they´re assigned, but often come back in between classes for repose. Students yearn to feel comfortable in their learning environment - providing a pleasant atmospheric experience in addition to a caring, compassionate, content expert creates the ideal mix. Although mired by the claims of a "No Child Left Behind" and proficiency test inundated educational system, trends overwhelmingly support that many students are ill prepared for the collegiate setting, lacking the necessary study skills and self discipline that leads to academic success. Tutors receive extensive training in study skills strategies and providing students new ways to approach learning where their former methods have failed them. Understanding how to utilize "wait time", create concept maps and actively read text materials, are just as important as knowing how to decipher the physics equation in last night´s homework. Students require a blend of instruction and strategy, which is what TASC aims to deliver. Guided by the mission, "providing a broad spectrum of academic resources that: equips undergraduate students with skills, strategies, and new approaches to learning; creating prepared, confident, and engaged learners, and cultivating individualized assistance within a student centered environment", places the student at the heart of what we do. "We have outgrown our room - twice, but never our mission or our dedication to helping students. We are the largest student service provider on-campus, with the small family feel. I am looking for increased growth in the semesters ahead."
