Yee Announces Endorsement of Hipona for Daly City Council
Yee’s 2006 Woman of the Year in tight north county council race. DALY CITY - Assemblymember Leland Yee today officially announced his endorsement of Annette Hipona for Daly City Council. Hipona, who currently sits on the Jefferson Elementary School Board, was Yee’s 2006 12th Assembly District Woman of the Year.
I proudly endorse Annette Hipona for Daly City Council,” said Yee. “Annette has not only fought to protect vital funding for our schools and libraries, but she has also been a steadfast advocate for our neighborhoods and working families. She is not one to shy away from hard work, but instead steps up to the plate whenever our children and community needs her leadership.”
In June, Yee won 49 of the 53 Daly City precincts in his nomination for State Senate, garnering nearly a 19 percentage point advantage over his closest competitor. Hipona was a driving force in Yee’s grassroots campaign and is prepared to duplicate the effort in her race for city council.
I am running to preserve the small town feel of our neighborhoods and their rich cultural and economic diversity, while also supporting development that brings affordable housing and living wage jobs to our city,” said Hipona. “I am honored to receive Assemblyman Yee’s endorsement and like him, I too plan on fighting the special interests and insisting on an open and responsive government for our residents.”
As a lifetime resident of Daly City, Hipona began her community involvement as a volunteer classroom tutor for eight hears. Gradually she assumed increased leadership responsibilities, as a an elected member of a district-wide Parent Advisory Committee, appointed board member of the Peninsula Library System, officer and fundraiser for the Friends of the Daily City library, and now as a member of the Jefferson Elementary School Board.
Hipona organized a citywide parking summit to address the parking crisis in Daly City. She has become an advocate for the quality of life and the economic and cultural diversity throughout Daly City neighborhoods. For her fight against government abuse of property rights, Hipona recently received the “Citizens Warrior Award” for Eminent Domain Reform from Municipal Officials for Redevelopment Reform (MORR) and Californians United for Redevelopment Education (CURE).
