MAYOR GAVIN NEWSOM ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS TO CITY’S HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

San Francisco, CA – Mayor Newsom today proudly announced the following reappointments to San Francisco’s Human Rights Commission:

Ms. Nazly Mohajer is a native of Iran and is an entrepreneur with extensive experience in business development management, international trade and trade finance. Mohajer is the founder and CEO of Minagratex Corporation, a manufacturing and importer of textiles and basic knit products. She has also worked as a systems analyst on the Space Shuttle program for NASA Johnson Space Center and later as a Marketing Analyst for Cal State University systems. Ms. Mohajer has experience as a Visualization Applications engineer where she focused on multimedia and defense applications. Nazly has always been a very active community member and is involved in many charitable and civic organizations and advisory boards. Mohajer is also the founder of Persian Arts & Cultural Society (PAC Society), a non-profit public organization. Nazly has a degree in Computer Science.

Rabbi Yoel H. Kahn is an accomplished scholar and religious leader. He is currently a Fellow at the Center for Rabbinic Enrichment at Jerusalem’s Shalom Hartman Institute as well as the director of the Taube Center for Jewish Life at San Francisco’s Jewish Community Center. Rabbi Kahn received an undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley in 1980 in Near Eastern Studies and completed his graduate study at the Institute for Jewish Studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem before being ordained as a Rabbi in 1985. Rabbi Kahn continued his study at Berkeley in the Doctoral program, and obtained a Ph.D. in Religious Studies in 1999. Rabbi Kahn has been published in numerous academic and religious journals and has served the Jewish Community on several councils and committees including the Metropolitan San Francisco Jewish Community Relations Council and the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

Ms. Cecilia Chung is the Deputy Director of the Transgender Law Center and was appointed to the Human Rights Commission by Mayor Newsom in September 2004. The Commission in September 2006 later elected her Vice-Chair. Chung is an immigrant from Hong Kong and has been a San Francisco resident since 1985. As an Asian transgender woman living with HIV, Cecilia is an outspoken advocate to end stigmas and discriminations in all communities. Ms. Chung worked as a court interpreter for Santa Clara County. She also served on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Celebration Committee, and the Board of the Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center. Her commitment to assisting the community has also extended to her efforts on the Transgender Community Advisory Board for UCSF TRANS, and the HIV Service Planning Council. Most notably, Cecilia founded the San Francisco Transgender Advocacy and Mentorship (SF TEAM), which plays host to quarterly events for the LGBTQ community. Cecilia attended City College of San Francisco and later transferred to Golden Gate University in 1987 where she pursued her undergraduate degree in International Management.


Ms. Faye Woo Lee currently serves a co-chair of the HRC Employment Committee. She is the current President of the San Francisco Lodge, Chinese Secretary of Grand Lodge, and the Chinese American Citizens Alliance, a national civil rights organization with the purpose of securing equal rights and equal opportunities for all Americans. She worked in the resettlement of Vietnamese Refuge Children’s’ Program and as a Child Welfare Supervisor in charge of Adoption for the Department of Human Services. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Fresno State and a Masters in Social Work Education from San Francisco State University.

The Human Rights Commission works to provide leadership and advocacy to secure protect and promote human rights for all people. It was established in 1964 by City Ordinance and became a Charter Commission in 1990.
