On April 16, a storm ravaged the northeast with rain and snow causing widespread flooding, power outages, destruction of property, and even death. In response to this tragedy, the IRS announced that affected taxpayers have a two day extension to file their tax returns.

Affected states range from Rhode Island and New York to South Carolina. Taxpayer in those states who had not already filed their tax returns have until midnight on April 19 to get it in.

According to a IRS press release, “affected taxpayers can mark their paper tax returns with the words ‘April 16 Storm.’ Taxpayers who e-file their returns can use their software’s ‘disaster’ feature, if available.”

IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson promises taxpayers in those affected states who mark their tax returns as specified will not incur “any late filing penalties.”
