Are They Dying in Vain?

John H. Adler
Are our young men and women serving in Iraq dying in vain?

A cruel but valid question.

The truth is they should have never been asked to go to this troubled country. How do we explain to the parents, spouses and children of our soldiers who have died, been maimed for life or are still serving in Iraq, that they have been sent on a bad mission?

How do we explain that a mindless, inexperienced, seemingly uncaring government has sent them on an impossible mission? Our men and women have committed themselves to serving their country but do their sacrifices actually serve their country or are they fulfilling the eccentricities and stubbornness of their misguided leaders?

Most people do not believe that placing our troops in untenable, no-win situations is serving our nation. Every logical thinking person should be aware by now that we can not win this war. Our troops are serving as buffers between factions mired in a civil war. Foreigners infiltrating from other countries are swelling the numbers of our enemies. For every enemy we kill, three others are ready to take his place. Iraq is a hydra with a million heads.

Our misguided invasion of Iraq has enabled Al Qaeda to become a widespread, international terrorist organization, well financed and efficiently run. Our armed interference in an Arab, middle-eastern country was the impetus Al Qaeda needed to make itself into a rallying cause for like-minded terrorists. Has our invasion of Iraq strengthened them? You better believe it!

What is it that our government does not understand about the realities? One certainly does not have to be a genius to grasp the facts of our untenable position.

I agree with many others that the performance of the new Congress with a slim Democratic majority has been indecisive and weak-kneed. The people of the United States have given them the mandate to bring the Iraq war to an end. If the Democratic Party expects to win the next Presidential election, they had better demonstrate they are able to govern.

And the time is now!
