Illuminating The Lotus

LA, stand up and take notice, On Saturday, Oct 20th (6:00pm-10:00pm-opening reception) Illume Gallery; the consciously evolved new gallery that exhibits and sells handcrafted Salt Lamps, located at 813 N. La Brea Ave. is currently showing the most enlightened exhibit of the year, through Nov 20.

Zana Licht, Founder and owner of Illume Gallery has graciously invited her friend and colleague Jim Aplington of Lotus Gallery from Nepal to display the most recent collection of over 20 master thangkas, including those by Prem Lama.

This innovative show features re-interpretations of Tibetan Buddhist religious scroll paintings (thangkas), as well as digital and installation art. In addition, contemporary Tibetan artists, Ang Sang, Gade, Jangyung, and Yak Tsetan are also on display. Images range from wildlife set against Tibetan landscape to whimsical takes on the mix of Tibetan and global cultures, that seem to ask us to consider the implications of rapid and radical social change. Mediums include crushed mineral pigments on canvas & photography.

When one thinks of Tibetan art, the word modern is rarely used. However, modern art in Tibet is growing rapidly. Though never abandoning the voices of their ancient culture, Tibetan artists strive to reach new levels of expression within this modern world.

Illume Gallery is a perfect match for such an exhibit. The backdrop of these salt crystal lamps provides an uplifting and peaceful atmosphere. When Zana Licht, (Illume Gallery owner) speaks of these beautiful natural creations, you see the light in her eyes dance with a childlike excitement. This demure woman explains how each lamp was crafted from ancient salt crystal that began forming millions of years ago at the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. They inspire comfort, relaxation and cast a soothing radiant glow as well as a natural healing and positive effect on our emotions.
