'Holidays in America' Native Americans racially excluded!
Well, our federal and state governments are using every reason they can come up with not to bring about a national holiday that would recognize Native Americans. Columbus found the Indians and their land so he should have the national holiday, as they see it. Columbus was a great sailor, he was only around four thousand miles off in finding India. So what. Columbus and his men were sick and almost dead. Island Indians (Taino) helped them gain their health back; no big deal there. It's all about the man, Columbus, not Indians. It's kind of like Thanksgiving today is not about Indians.
Our nations' young school children are taught that Columbus is a great man, a hero, someone to be looked up to. Not to be confused with the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.
School teachers are not allowed to teach the truth, the real history of Columbus, to our young children because it's deemed inappropriate at their age. Well, if our young school children are to look upon Columbus as a hero why not tell them what the so-called hero did to Indian people he came in contact with? Shouldn't they know just what they're celebrating on Columbus Day? It's called truth in education.
They would learn Columbus enslaved Indian men, women and children. He and his men raped women and children. He hunted Indians down with dogs for sport. He let the dogs eat Indians (still alive) for food. On his way back home Columbus tied up an Indian on his ship's mast and let dogs eat him alive for food.
Columbus wanted gold. He used inhuman torture on Indian family members to make other Indians work in the gold mines. He made it a point to burn their homes and villages. If an Indian refused to work in the mines Columbus would have his men cut off a hand, nose or ear while making sure other Indians had to watch. Now there's something to celebrate on Columbus Day. Now I'm starting to see why our federal government honors Columbus with a national holiday.
History note: After the Indian massacre at Sand Creek, Colorado a parade was held in Denver City where men proudly walked holding up Indian heads on sticks. They had scalps of Indian babies that were cut out of the mothers' wombs while still alive. These men used Indian children for target practice while making bets who could shoot an Indian child first. The Indian tribe had a white flag and American flag flying while all this was going on in their camp. Colorado's state governor and Denver's Mayor support the Columbus holiday in their state today.

Our federal government and some state governments want us Americans to only think about the "fact" that Columbus found new land with Indians on it, and he claimed it and them in the name of God. Today some state governments have taken a hard look at the true history of Columbus, the man. They have dropped his day as a state paid holiday. Around seventeen states have taken this action. The state of South Dakota by law changed Columbus Day to Native American Day. Oklahoma government dropped Columbus Day, it now has a bill before it calling for Native American Day. The state republican party leadership wants nothing to do with it.
A bill is now before the U.S. Congress calling for National Native American Day. Thirty congressmen at this time have signed on in support, but not one of them is a republican. Democratic Congressman Joe Baca of California has stepped up to the plate and introduced H.RES.76. "If our federal government is going to have tax paid holidays then one of them should recognize the first true Americans of this land, not Columbus", said Mike Graham.
Oklahoma's two senators Coburn and Inhofe do not support bringing about Native American Day, they are unwilling to introduce a joint holiday resolution on the senate side of the house. These two senators are the biggest reason you will not see a national holiday recognizing all that Native Americans have done and gone through to make America the freest country on earth today. "Most Americans do not know that our type of government came from the Indians. Federalism, separation of government powers and freedom of speech were alive and well under Indian governments. Our U.S. Senate recognizes this fact. It sure didn't come from Europe, Africa or the Middle East", said Graham.
You can join with Americans all across America working to bring about National Native American Day by going to this web site: www.UnitedNativeAmerica.com
A holiday petition link is posted on the site's main page, and other Indian community issues are also posted. It's past time for America to come full circle and offer recognition to the Native American community in their true home land.
