3 Ways Attending the Office Christmas Party Can Discourage Workplace Affairs

Ruth Houston
Office Christmas parties are notorious breeding grounds for workplace affairs. That’s one reason why you should attend the annual Christmas party at your spouse or significant other’s job. A survey by a private investigation firm found that of all the times for a workplace affair to begin, the office Christmas party is when it’s most likely to occur.

If you accompany your partner to their company holiday party, it can act as a deterrent to office affairs in 3 ways.

1. Short-Circuit a Possible Office Affair

The workplace now vies with the internet as the #1 place for cheaters to find willing partners with whom to have an affair. This is prime time for an emotional affair with a co-worker to turn into a sexual affair. If your partner has been secretly admiring a workmate all year, the office party is when they’re most likely to make their move -- especially if you’re not there. Your presence at the party might keep a budding office romance from blossoming into a full blown affair.

2. Keep Predatory Co-workers at Bay

Another reason for attending the company Christmas party with your spouse or significant other is to make your presence known and “mark your turf.” Any co-worker who has designs on your partner, is unlikely to make a play for them with you there. Your presence is certain to put a damper on their plans.

3. Stamp Out Sex at the Office Party

It’s a common practice for employees to sneak away from the office party to have sex. A survey by Men's Health magazine found that 44 percent of the men “hooked up” with a co-worker at a holiday office party at some point in their life. The Trojan Condoms survey found that 33% of office workers admitted to having had sex with a workmate during or after an office Christmas party. Alcohol was a major contributing factor. One drink too many can lower inhibitions to the danger zone. Infidelity could be just a couple of cocktails away. Your being at the party with your partner may prevent them from engaging in behavior they’ll later regret.

What If you Already Suspect an Office Affair

What if you suspect that your spouse or significant other is already romantically involved with someone at work? The office Christmas party is the perfect opportunity to confirm what you suspect, or to set your mind at ease. By observing your partner’s interactions with opposite sex co-workers, you’ll be able to tell if there’s a workplace affair going on. You’ll even be able to pick out your partner’s lover by their body language and their behavior in each other’s presence. But knowing what to look for is the key.
