Ericksonian Hypnosis - Covert Hypnosis Techniques

Emma Martin
Ericksonian hypnosis is truly one of the most useful and commonly implemented forms of hypnosis we have today. The principle behind this hypnosis technique is one that is appropriate and highly useful, both for conventional psychotherapy and more unconventional covert opportunities in the field.

Ericksonian hypnosis is unique in a way that orders and commands to the subconscious can be made indirectly by story telling or through therapeutic metaphor. For example, you would be asked by your hypnotist to visualize the guides or statements he would be telling. Through proper and appropriate metaphors or symbolism, you would be guided accordingly to attain a state of mind that would prompt both virtual and actual results.

Perhaps, the best way to understand Ericksonian hypnosis is to understand how its proponent and developer Milton Hyland Erickson used his mind techniques on himself. The story of Erickson is rather inspirational. Erickson was born to a rural family in Nevada. From birth, he encountered many challenges and defects. He was colorblind, tone deaf and also slightly dyslexic. At the age of 17 years, Erickson suffered from a near-death experience after being stricken with polio. The severe infection in his body almost killed him and left him paralyzed for a few years.

After his bout with polio, Erickson spent much of his time confined to his wheel chair in his room. With his eagerness to get near the window to be able to see what was outside, Erickson started developing his own mind technique to visualize and imagine what was there in the outside world. Often he found himself in a deep daydream or trance state. Erickson noticed that when he visualized, he was able to rock his chair. His mind grew sharper and keener to the minor details around him. Through watching how his baby sister learned how to walk, Erickson started to re-learn walking again. Ultimately, he was successful.

Through his fondness of visualization and incorporating hypnotic commands in stories, Erickson was able to develop a state of mental condition and activity that leads to better mind conditioning and outcomes. Thus, Ericksonian hypnosis was born. The techniques are not as profound and explicit as other forms of hypnosis, but the results are almost instant and are more readily realizable. What's more, Erickson's methods are better suited to covert hypnosis techniques employed outside the therapist's office and so his methods have been embraced by NLP practitioners and marketers of all types.

By using metaphors and symbols, the mind is being conditioned to set itself and adapt to changes at a gradual pace. As a result, Ericksonian hypnosis can be easily conducted and is more conveniently implemented. More people can benefit from its advantages.
