National Radio Talk Show Host Dennis Prager To Speak At Benefit For Elizabeth House Shelter
Prager will appear as guest speaker at "An Era for Change – Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness," a gala dinner and auction at the University Club of Pasadena, to raise funding for Elizabeth House, the only shelter in the San Gabriel Valley for homeless pregnant women and their children.
"Tom Snyder has called Dennis one of America´s five best speakers," says Angelina Coe, Executive Director of the Pasadena-based nonprofit organization. "Dennis has lectured on all seven continents – including Antarctica – and appeared on national television shows like the Today Show, Larry King Live, Hardball and the CBS Evening News. We´re thrilled that he´s agreed to spend this most special evening with us."
"Dennis is committed to helping his listeners change their lives for the better," Anthony Stanley, President of the Board of Directors, adds. "This is a passion which all of us involved with Elizabeth House and "An Era for Change" share. I´ve been looking forward to Dennis´ talk ever since we came up with the idea of asking him!"
"An Era for Change" will begin at 6 p.m. with a silent auction featuring items from rock climbing and extreme bootcamp packages to four Disneyland/California Adventure Hopper passes. Guests may also want to bid on opportunities to spend the day and have lunch with a casting director or Lifetime Movie Director, win $500 worth of Omaha Steaks, or even get their teeth whitened.
"There´s something for everyone," says Benefit co-chair, Maritza Smith.
Travel buffs will be especially tempted by the live auction. Vacation packages include a stay at an ocean villa in Oahu´s Turtle Bay valued at $12,000; a week at a cottage in the Newport Peninsula valued at $3500; and two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines for a one-week stay at a condominium in Lake Tahoe, only minutes from Heavenly Valley Ski Resort, with a pair of Bose headphones thrown in as a "bon voyage" gift.
Since no live auction is complete without something that sparkles, discriminating bidders may want to save their pennies to purchase a $2500 gift certificate from Asanti Jewelers. An Opportunity Drawing for a $1000 gift certificate from Tiffany & Company will take place as well.
"We´re grateful to the many generous donors who contributed to the auction and opportunity drawing," says co-chair Rosalie Halverson. "But it wasn´t difficult, frankly, to convince them to become involved. Elizabeth House is a cause that is almost impossible to say no to. So many great things are happening there."
Elizabeth House offers homeless pregnant women and their children far more than shelter and food. Residents take classes in pre-natal healthcare, parent education, and home and financial management. They also receive job skills training and therapeutic counseling and case management. In addition, Elizabeth House provides a "follow up" program, which includes many of these services, for over 100 alumnae.
"Our goal is to enable our residents to become self-sufficient and fulfilled members of our community," Coe explains. "We want to help them take those first important steps into a new ´Era for Change´ that will last for the rest of their lives."
Individual tickets for "An Era for Change" are available for $150/person. For more information or to order tickets, call 626.577.4434 or visit www.elizabethhouse.net. The University Club of Pasadena is located at 175 North Oakland Avenue in Pasadena.
The mission of Elizabeth House is to provide shelter and family-oriented support to homeless pregnant women and their children through a comprehensive program that addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual, and economic needs of women and children in a nurturing atmosphere.
