Wesson Poised to Run for LA Council Seat
Former Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson May Run for Los Angeles City Council SeatOn Tuesday, June 7, the Executive Board of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor unanimously nominated 10th LA Council District Member Martin Ludlow to become the next head of the nation’s most-influential central labor council. Ludlow, upon confirmation, will join Gene Upshaw, head of the NFL Players Association, as a high-profile and powerful African-American labor leader.
Within minutes of Ludow’s nomination, former Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson was reportedly contacting supporters and community leaders in an effort to get a jump-start on the race for Ludlow’s not-yet-vacated council seat. Wesson, who currently works for LA County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, had been eyeing the Senate seat of termed-out State Senator Kevin Murry. On Wednesday, June 8, the Los Angeles Times was reporting that Murry was also contemplating a run for Ludlow’s soon-to-be-vacated seat.
Ludlow’s selection as chief of the LA County Federation won’t be official until ratified by the Federation’s delegates on June 20. He is expected to resign his Council seat shortly thereafter.
