LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV) has endorsed Cliff Numark, Tim Goodrich and Pat Furey for Torrance City Council in the June 3, 2008 election.

"The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters is proud to endorse and support Cliff Numark, Tim Goodrich and Pat Furey for Torrance City Council. They are extraordinary community leaders who will stand up for Torrance and work hard to advocate for their fellow residents to provide a better quality of life and improve the environment for families and children," said Mitchell Schwartz, LALCV President.

Cliff Numark is a Parks & Recreation Commissioner in Torrance. He currently serves as Director of Donor Recruitment for the Southern California American Red Cross overseeing more than 250 staff members and a budget of $10 million. As councilmember, Numark is committed to increasing public transit use to reduce traffic and air pollution; expanding Torrance's green waste program citywide; and encouraging more restaurants to participate in the Clean Bay Certification program, which recognizes restaurants that adopt cleaning practices that prevent pollution from entering the Santa Monica Bay.

Tim Goodrich is a community advocate and an Iraq War veteran. If elected, Goodrich will work to ensure full compliance with the Cool Cities initiative; implement a program to eliminate upfront cost of residential solar panels; create green building standards for new public buildings and commercial buildings; provide recycling services to multi-unit residences and apartment buildings; and increase bike lanes in the city. Additionally, he will work with the South Coast AQMD and the Water Quality Control Board to ensure environmental cleanup of contaminated groundwater near the Exxon-Mobil refinery.

Pat Furey is a commissioner for the City of Torrance and the Torrance Unified School District. He is the president of the Torrance Education Foundation and his local homeowners association. As councilmember, Furey pledges to implement the "Start at the Source" program, requiring natural dispersal of water run-off into the ecosystem by requiring more green space; increase the recycling program coverage to include apartments and condominiums; and work to ensure future developments to uphold a high "green standard" in the city.

Fourteen candidates are running for the Torrance City Council, including one incumbent and thirteen challengers vying for four seats elected citywide. Torrance, a South Bay city with a population of 142,000, faces several environmental challenges, including contaminated groundwater near an oil refinery, limited recycling program coverage, and the third worst air quality in the state.

"We will work hard to help elect these three candidates because they understand the environmental challenges ahead and have solid plans to help clean up Torrance. We look forward to working with them as councilmembers in Torrance," said Schwartz.

The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters is dedicated to endorsing and supporting candidates committed to preserve, protect and enhance the environment in Los Angeles County. Throughout its twenty-year history, LALCV has helped elect more than 100 environmental leaders to local offices.
