May 29, 2008 (Sacramento) Legislation by Assemblymember Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles) which would authorize the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) to place on the ballot an additional 0.5% sales tax for transportation funding passed the Assembly today on a vote of 47:25. AB 2321 would amend SB 314 (Murray 2003) by extending the period in which the tax could be allocated for a 30 year period and allowing the extra revenue generated from the sales tax to be used for projects in MTA´s Long Range Transportation Plan. It is estimated to generate $20 billion for 20 years and $30 billion for 30 years.

"Los Angeles desperately needs to improve our transportation infrastructure. People spend too much time in their idling cars sitting in traffic rather than at home with their families," said Feuer. "This bill could enable Los Angeles residents to transform our region."

AB 2321is supported by a diverse group of interests including the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles Business Council, Valley Industry & Commerce Association, Environment California and CALPIRG. It will be heard next in the Senate Transportation Committee.
