Turkey: Anti-West Order of Coup Plots is here to Stay

Rizwan Ghani
Turkey is in the middle of a political challenge as reports of coup plot and firing make news http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jul/06/turkey. Professor Soli Ozel, of Istanbul's Bilgi University´s, description of challenge for pro-west rulers in Ankara has global connotation- developed world employing every trick to survive by keeping the developing world economically and politically subservient. Ozel said, ´They are trying to pump up a modern urban Turkish nationalism with a racist tinge. ´They are anti-Western and want to ally Turkey with Russia, China and even Iran. It's very schizophrenic and full of paradoxes.'

In Washington, Aitaz Ashan has termed America´s policy towards Pakistan´s judiciary as ´deaf and dumb´. In Pakistan, political pundits are predicting dire consequences for country´s political future including PPP as public frustration grows over delay in independence of judiciary, restoration of judges and ouster of US backed Musharraf, who PML(N) believes is the sole cause of country´s economic and security challenges. The failed 2008 budget, growing fuel and food prices have made matters worse. Even Paterson, the US Ambassador has predicted an early election.

The question that begs the answer is why Turkish, Pakistanis, Algerians, Haitians, Japanese, British, Filipinos or nationalists of 130 countries having 737 US military bases under cover of ´War on Terror´ to defend American economic and oil interest are voicing similar anti-west and US sentiments? http://www.arabnews.com/?page=6§ion=0&article=111488&d=4&m=7&y=2008. The G-8 protests show that not only majority of developing nations but the public of most developed states also opposes current ´free market economy´ policies being ´forced´ through policies and legislations passed by imposed/unpopular rulers including coalition governments. The protests outside G-8 Summit in Japan and stalled Doha Talks are cases in point.

Dr. Hassan Askari´s article, Political Dimension of Counter-Terrorism http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=200876story_6-7-2008_pg3_2 shows how local analysts fail to gauge west´s strategic onslaught on developing world including Pakistan to protect their economic, military and energy interests. There cannot be a more unfortunate case of failure to misdirect national challenges and ignore threats to national security and constitutional rights of the public. The anti-west and US sentiments in 130 countries including Turkey show that Islamabad´s immediate challenges are economic, constitutional, security and foreign policy. Anti-state elements personified through so called extremism and terrorism are the byproducts or result of these failures. It is therefore very much possible that external forces are behind such elements to protect vested stakes.

West to impose its global economic, political and energy policies is undermining judiciaries to compromise constitutional protections of people in developing countries. The case in point is US food aid for Haiti. It is just one example of hundreds of other countries across the globe including Pakistan. Haiti is being given rice under US Aid program. Rice, grown by US farmers, transported by US Ships and subsidized by US govt. is bought by Washington and distributed worldwide with strings attached.

The names of products and countries are different but the method and madness is similar. A two billion dollar daily capital flow from poorer nations to US treasury helps Washington narrow the trade gap and manage inflation. (The Outlook, WSJ published in June 29, Arab News). Out of 920 billion dollars, foreigners pumped in US stock market in 2007, 361 billion US dollars or 39 percent came from poor countries. It explains West´s support for corrupt regimes in third world.

Washington, reportedly by giving 16 billion dollar agriculture subsidy is ensuring following things within US but in the process is doing exactly the opposite in rest of the world. US by sustaining agriculture sector through subsidy is controlling unemployment, easing pressure on cities and avoiding creation of slums/ghettos. In turn, it allows Washington to save non-development expenditure to cater to internally displaced population due to unemployment etc. including basic utilities, controlling crimes and health care.

In contrast, West and major international donors are aggressively pushing developing world to do away with subsidies on energy, agriculture, education and healthcare and instead opt for privatization. It is despite the reports that US itself is giving one trillion dollar annual subsidy to its energy sector. The West is pushing developing world to continue with energy import policies including energy generation, vehicle imports instead of helping them adopt alternate energy. It exposes third world economies to soaring inflation, widening budgetary deficits and hyper inflation but West allows it to protect business interests of foreign banks.

West itself is embracing non-oil energy options and adopting state of the art mass transit schemes to earn revenue, reduce impact of inflation and energy imports. UK´s expansion of mass transit system and proposed installation of 7000 wind turbines as part of non-oil energy option are cases in point. The third world privatization without social security is forcing millions and millions of unemployed into the world of crime, exploitation and living in unhygienic conditions resulting in diseased communities. The privatization resulted in disproportionate disparity in wages, which in itself is a violation of national constitutions and 1936 US Supreme Court New Deal decision.

The New Deal judgment protected constitutional rights of public against ´free market´ policies including national privatization policies, unions´ right to work, bargain salaries and state protections against events that are beyond citizens´ control like high oil prices, inflation and currency devaluation issues. Reportedly, the average production cost of a barrel of oil is 31 US dollars in Gulf with exception of sweet Iraqi barrel of oil with a production cost of $ 2 to $19.

The report of 5.6 trillion barrel of Iraq oil reserves for next 50 years puts in perspective the US-Iraq oil deal and reports of continued Iraq occupation for another hundred years. Ironically, not a single advanced nation, leader or judge in world is ready to hold the concerned accountable including speculators for gross over pricing of barrel of oil. Indonesia, as protest against high oil prices has given up its OPEC membership (May 2008). World´s unofficial largest oil producer Venezuela also wants out due to rise of oil prices (March 29, 2008 Arab News).

The world is being exploited by energy cartel and unfortunately developing world´s spineless leaders enjoying free fuel and electricity are unwilling to stand up to global currency and energy cartel while the public suffers the consequences of currency devaluation and inflation. The use of terms like global recession, stagflation etc. are nothing but a cover up to exploit public by the global political and business elite. History shows that Indian inflation figures touched 13.7 percent in 1991-1992 under PM Roa with Manmohan as finance minister. It did not push up food, energy and commodity prices (inflation in India and inflated egos; April 20, 2008). Manmohan should explain as to why less 7% inflation has pushed prices up.

M.J. Akbar in the same article ascribed inflation to political instability. It brings us back to West´s support for ´free market economy´ policies in developing world. It explains West´s persistent love for ´coalition governments´ at the cost of representative governments. It shows why West allows developing world leaderships to undermining constitutional and democratic rights of public including independence of judiciaries, media and manipulation of state machineries including security forces and police to protect free market economy interests including privatization.

In foreign policy terms, China has acquired 21 percent of US stocks with 77 billion dollars. Washington as outfall of Iraq war unable to protect its financial interests within US has instead engaged in a quid-pro-quo ´geographic acquisition´ or encirclement against Asian powers including China, Russia and Iran defined as ´Greater Middle East´ plan by M.J. Akbar in his article War and Consequence (June 29, Arab News). According to Akbar, the change in ME has merely begun. It puts in perspective West´s support for Indo-US deal, long-term interest in (northern) Pakistan, Tibet and Bangladesh. West´s disdain for nationalists cum anti-occupation forces in ME and rest of the world.

Keeping in view the West naked efforts to protect their economic and political interests through global, multilateral and bilateral deals or pure use of force it is time for developing world including Islamabad to disengage itself from policies including use of force to protect national economic, political and security interests. Following rest of Gulf States neighboring Iraq, Syria too has started securing its border. It is time Islamabad pays heed to PM Gilani´s call and fence Pak-Afghan border to secure itself from the West´s ´grab resources of developing world´ under the pretext of War on Terror.

Finally, unless West is willing to respect international law, rights of small nations and withdraw forces/end occupations/ close bases the anti-west order of coup plots is here to stay. The unrepresentative third world coalition govts have become part of the problems because they are either unwilling or unable to protect their national interests. It does not matter to the West if poverty-stricken desperate Haitian parents are forced to sell their children for as little as hundred fifty dollars. Haitian farmers are the latest causality of West´s agri-subsidy forcing them to join millions of farmers from rest of the world who are left out of business because local rice farmers cannot match the low prices of American subsidized rice. It therefore leaves nationalists to continue with their struggle against powerful West while their country fellows struggle against poverty, exploitation and abuses-children no bars.
