Russian Missile Shield could help protect USA and Europe

Ian Brockwell
It would seem that the Bush administration may have inspired Russia to consider a Missile Shield of their own, as there have been rumors that they are considering Cuba as a potential base for their long range nuclear bombers. This would of course be an ideal spot for missiles as well.

Bush and Cheney Armageddon merchandiseApparently, the Russian military have already inspected various places on Cuba for suitable landing areas for their bombers.

Venezuela has also appeared on the list and President Hugo Chávez has already agreed to increase military co-operation with Russia, which will include the purchase of further Russian weapons.

Vladimir Putin (the former President of Russia) has already hinted at placing missiles in Kaliningrad, a Russian territory that borders Poland and other European countries.

The United States has responded angrily to the possibility of Russia placing missiles so close to its homeland, but there is no reason to believe that these missiles would ever be pointed at the US. And Cuba is about the same distance from the American mainland as Poland is to Russia. But if they are both for peaceful purposes, why worry?

Like the missiles that the US plan to install in Poland (together with a radar station in the Czech Republic), which are designed to protect the United States and Europe from any nuclear attack from Iran (or countries with similar intentions), the Russian shield can do the same (which is good to know).

Although Iran has no nuclear weapons at the moment, and according to US intelligence have no plans to do so in the near future, who can say what countries may pose a threat in the years to come? A Russian shield could be of great benefit to the US if Jamaica or the Seychelles (for example) should be added to the "axis of evil" list and decide to produce nuclear weapons.

There is certainly no reason to fear a few extra Russian missiles appearing in the world, even those on America´s doorstep. Russia has no hostile intentions, and the only time this situation might change is if the US considered invading Russia for their oil and gas, or attempted to make a "regime change" there. But hopefully, the United States has no such ambitions, so this would never be put to the test.

As for Europe, they have even less to worry about. Why should Russia consider launching missiles their direction? If they really wanted to cause a problem, they could stop supplying Europe with gas.

Just recently Russia has been having serious talks with China that could lead to an oil and gas deal between the two countries. A 2,700 kilometer pipeline from East Siberia to China is almost complete and capable of carrying 600,000 barrels a day. China is the second largest oil consumer in the world.

It´s comforting to know that Russia is willing to share the responsibility of world security, and have the military power to protect their own country and others from the bad guys! :-)
