The Joy Of Growing Houseplants In Home Or Office

David Slone
Houseplants are a great way to make your home or office brighter and more cheerful. Many people can even get attached to their plants as though they were pets. In some families plants are even handed down from one generation to the next. In my family it is a Mother-in-law's tongue, or as some people call it, a Snake Plant. My great-grandmother passed it down (through cuttings) to my grandmother and so on down the line. To some it may seem odd to have a plant as an heirloom, but this tradition is not uncommon.

Houseplants also have the added benefit of helping to purify the air in your home or office. Plants take in carbon dioxide that can build up to harmful levels indoors and release oxygen into the air. A house, or office, that has plenty of live healthy plants will have people that breathe better and feel more relaxed.

Houseplants are also great decorations, adding beauty to your home or office. There is an almost unlimited selection of different types of plants and varieties to choose from. Try to choose plants that will blend in with, or compliment, your current decor while at the same time ideal for the environmental conditions (ie temperature, light levels, and humidity).

There are many houseplants that are very beautiful, however, the beauty of your houseplants can be embellished by whatever container you decide to use. Some plants look nice in a small clay pot, while others may fit well into a much larger pot. With so many styles and colors of pots to choose from it should be easy to get something that complements your home or office.

Houseplants are also good therapy. For example, clinical studies have shown that workers who perform their duties in the midst of live plants enjoy higher morale, higher job satisfaction and less missed days than those who don't. Having plants around your home will also provide the same calming effects for you and your family and friends.

Keeping your houseplants healthy does take some time and effort, but in the end it is well worth it. It can be a lot of fun to experiment with different types of plants, but you should always pay attention to the particular needs of any plants you decide to keep in your home or office. Some plants require more watering than others, different temperature ranges, different lighting, and different soil types. With a little bit of research you can choose the plants best suited for you and ensure your success as an indoor gardener.
