The Hobby of Fish Aquariums - Therapy And Beauty For Your Home

David Slone
Fish can do wonders to our home and well being. Having a fish aquarium adds a sense of style and beauty inside every home, regardless of how simple the interiors may be. But most importantly, fishes are regarded to be therapeutic pets to many. They can become sources of enjoyment, especially for children in any household.

So for any novice in the hobby of fish aquariums, here are some tips to help you start with setting up the aquarium: (Note that this is for freshwater aquariums. If you would like to set up a saltwater tank look at How to setup a saltwater aquarium)

Find a book or any reference material online that has the basics of aquarium set-up. Having this with you while setting up your new aquarium eases the frustration and disappointments that may come along the way.

Research about the types of fishes that you want to keep in the aquarium. Before purchasing the aquarium, you should have an idea of how large your preferred fish will grow. Make sure of the availability of the fish food for every type. There are some fishes though that only feed on corals. Consider also the compatibility of animals that you plan to put in the aquarium.

Request your supplier to make a water test before purchasing the animals. You can also use test kits that you can get from your pet store. Water is the most critical component in any aquarium set-up.

Ask your fish supplier how the animals have been gathered – if they were farm raised, hand caught or used with chemicals. Chemical-based capture is not safe within the aquarium.

In line with the set-up, here are reminders on how to keep them safe and healthy:

  • Do not over feed your animals in the aquarium.

  • At least once a month, water should be changed by 25% to 50%.

  • If you have sick or new animals, make a new quarantine aquarium for them.

  • As soon as the water has evaporated, replace it with fresh and chlorine-free water.

  • Changes in the temperature or salinity have to be made slowly, unless you are making use of salinity to remove some parasites.

  • Have a daily test of ammonia and PH; nitrates are to be monitored once a week.

Do not pretend to know everything and take resolutions to any problem without further assistance from your fish supplier. Fish, like other animals and plants, are sensitive species that need proper care and special attention all the time.

Keep on reading and researching to gather new and helpful information on your new hobby. Make it sure that you have enough budget and patience to maintain the expenses of having a fish aquarium hobby.

I also suggest that you join other fish hobbyists or groups that can help you gain the right information on these animals. First-hand experiences are still significant, besides the fact that it adds fun and excitement in your life knowing that you have new friends to discuss your hobby with. And always remember that we should treat every life form on earth like how we want to be treated.
