MAYOR GAVIN NEWSOM WELCOMES PFIZER TO SAN FRANCISCO
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Mayor Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday that Pfizer will be relocating the worldwide headquarters of their Biotherapeutics and Bioinnovation Center (BBC) to Mission Bay.
Currently, the Pfizer BBC is located in South San Francisco. Initially, about 100 employees would be working at Mission Bay in 100,500 sq/ft of R&D/Office space located at 455 Mission Bay Boulevard South.
"Pfizer's decision to locate their Biotherapeutics and Bioinnovation Center in Mission Bay is a significant win for San Francisco and is a clear indication that Mission Bay is one of the nation´s premier life science centers," said Mayor Newsom. "San Francisco offers companies like Pfizer a world-class urban innovation district anchored by the nation´s pre-eminent biomedical university, and unparalleled opportunities for collaboration and access to the very best talent that the United States and the world have to offer."
"This move to be next door to U.C.S.F.'s Mission Bay campus will position Pfizer's Biotherapeutics and Bioinnovation Center for success in the aggressive pursuit of the most exciting and innovative science and the recruitment of the very best scientists," said Corey Goodman, Ph.D., President of the Pfizer Biotherapeutics and Bioinnovation Center. "Mission Bay presents a unique opportunity for our entrepreneurial organization to collaborate with world-class biomedical scientists and biotech organizations in a campus-type setting which allows researchers to easily mingle, exchange ideas and collaborate.
The BBC was formed as a new division of Pfizer in October 2007. It is Pfizer´s entrepreneurial business division charged with discovering and bringing new biotherapeutics into Pfizer. The center will work with academic institutions, as well as the biotech and venture communities to find new compounds and incubate startups with innovative technologies. In addition, the BBC was created to build the technology platforms expected to deliver a steady pipeline of biotherapeutics and to stimulate grassroots collaborations.
Pfizer expects to move to San Francisco in early 2010.
The event included a ceremonial groundbreaking with Corey Goodman, President of the Pfizer BBC, and Joel Marcus, CEO of Alexandria Real Estate Equities.
