3 Newsworthy Cases of Well-Known Cheating Husbands Who Committed Financial Infidelity

Ruth Houston
A few years ago I wrote a brief article calling attention to the link between financial infidelity and sexual infidelity. Two landmark studies were done that year, but neither study mentioned the connection between the two.

Financial Infidelity Accompanies Sexual Infidelity

My early research indicated that financial infidelity often accompanies sexual infidelity. A cheating husband must resort to some type of financial deception to cover up the expenditures associated with his extramarital affair.

3 Cheaters Who Committed Financial Infidelity

To drive home the connection between financial and sexual infidelity, lets look at three high-profile cheating husbands who recently made national news when their extramarital affairs were exposed. They are prime examples of financial infidelity associated with sexual infidelity.

Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer paid $3000 for the services of a high priced call girl, and was reported to have spent an estimated $80,000 with an elite prostitution ring.

Peter Cook, the now ex-husband of supermodel Christie Brinkley, gave his teenage mistress $15,000 for a down payment on a car, then paid her $300,000 in hush money after their was exposed. He also racked up over $3000 a month on internet porn and adult matchmaker sites.

John Edwards´ mistress, Rielle Hunter is said to be receiving payments of $15,000 a month. Edwards claims someone else is making these payments without his knowledge, on his behalf. Though he insists his affair with Hunter ended in 2006, it appears there´s still some serious financial infidelity going on.

It´s doubtful that Silda Spitzer, Christie Brinkley, or Elizabeth Edwards had any idea their husbands were spending substantial sums of money to initiate and maintain their extramarital affairs.

It Happens Across the Board

These high-profile cheating husbands represent the extreme end of the spectrum, but financial infidelity happens at all income levels. If there´s an affair going on, financial infidelity is being perpetrated somewhere along the line. To keep his affair hidden, a cheating husband has no choice, but to lie about, or conceal the missing funds.

Exposed At Tax Time

A significant amount of financial infidelity is exposed during the tax season, when couples file their joint income tax returns. But an observant wife can find the telltale signs of financial and sexual infidelity all year long. Maintaining a watchful eye on the family finances will keep her from being the last to know.
