Says Lunsford Will Bring Change to Washington and be a Strong Advocate for Veterans.

LOUISVILLE - Bob Kerrey, the distinguished Vietnam veteran and former Senator and Governor from Nebraska, threw his support behind Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate Bruce Lunsford on Saturday at a rally in Hardin County. Kerrey, who received the Medal of Honor for heroic service in Vietnam, criticized 24-year incumbent Mitch McConnell for his positions on veterans' issues, as well as for his unwavering support of President Bush's economic policies.

"Of all the things in the world for us to be asked to do, to share a little of our income for a GI Bill of Rights so the veterans returning could afford to go to college - I thought that bill would pass 100 to nothing," Kerrey told an audience that included several veterans. Noting that the bill had the widespread support of Democrats and Republicans, Kerrey said, "Mitch McConnell was one of 22 who voted against it. I would not support Mitch McConnell just on that basis."

Kerrey also criticized the Bush-McConnell economic policies that have led to the current financial meltdown.

"The policy of Bush and McConnell is that you cut taxes for wealthy people, and they'll invest and spend that money and it'll be good for the middle class," Kerrey said. "It has never worked, and it is not working in 2008."

Lunsford, who himself served his country in the National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves, praised Kerrey as a true leader and thanked him for coming to Kentucky on his behalf. "It's a privilege and an honor to have a man of Senator Kerrey's caliber take the time to come here and tell the voters of Kentucky what is at stake in this election," Lunsford said of Kerrey. "He has given so much to his country, and he's seen how Mitch McConnell's partisan obstructionism has blocked the change we need. After 24 years in Washington, it's time for a change."

Kerrey was the second high-profile veteran to visit Kentucky on Lunsford's behalf in recent weeks. Decorated Vietnam veteran and former U.S. Senator Max Cleland visited Mt. Sterling and Frankfort with Lunsford on Oct. 18.

Lunsford has also received the endorsement of retired Four-Star General Wesley Clark and U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania, the only Iraq war veteran in Congress.
