LOUISVILLE - President Bill Clinton travelled to Kentucky today to help Democrat Bruce Lunsford make the case for change at events in Paducah and Bowling Green.

Calling Lunsford a true change agent, President Clinton laid out the choice facing voters this November.

"If you want to change America, you send Bruce Lunsford to the Senate," Clinton said. "It would be hard to find someone more qualified to serve."

"I want to say to all of you, I am grateful to Bruce for taking on Mitch McConnell. We need him to win and he's going to win if you turn out for him."

Lunsford, who is locked in a tight race for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by 24-year Republican incumbent Mitch McConnell, reminded voters about how the economy fared while President Clinton was in the White House. Lunsford pledged that if elected to the Senate, he would do all he could to revive Kentucky's economy, which is currently one of 27 states classified as being in an economic recession thanks to Bush-McConnell policies.

"The more than 230,000 Kentucky jobs that Bill Clinton created when he was in the White House have disappeared over the last eight years because of the policies Mitch McConnell helped George Bush put in place," Lunsford said.

"I am running for the Senate to clean up the mess Mitch has made and to work for the changes we need - not just to get those jobs back to Kentucky but to create an economy focused on making sure that people who work hard can realize the American dream."

From January 1993 through December 2000, Kentucky added 232,900 jobs and the unemployment rate fell from 6.5 percent to 4.6 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"I want to thank Bill Clinton for coming to Kentucky to help me make the case for change and for reminding people that their government can in fact work for them," Lunsford added.
