Offering environmentally-friendly home furnishings, The Consignment Warehouse goes green
According to a report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) furniture accounted for 9.3 million tons, or 3.7 percent, of our waste stream in 2007.
For Mike Pegler, owner of an upscale consignment store, The Consignment Warehouse in Westlake Village, buying and selling previously owned furniture is a great environmentally-friendly option for consumers.
As a standard practice, we already recycle cans, glass, and paper – why not include recycle furniture? From the day this 20,000-square-foot company opened its doors more than 10 years ago it has offered environmentally-conscious shoppers an alternative to new mass-produced furniture.
"We offer a green solution to buyers and sellers by encouraging the recycle, reuse and reclaim philosophy," Pegler said. "There are steps people can take to lessen their carbon footprint and help the environment and still have a home full of top-quality fashionable furniture."
Through the purchase of gently used or slightly imperfect furniture from stores like The Consignment Warehouse, materials that would otherwise be destroyed are spared.
Pegler offers six compelling reasons to recycle furniture:
No new trees were cut down, thus protecting wildlife habitats.
No new fluorocarbons were released into the atmosphere to add a furniture finish.
No new energy was consumed by factory assembly lines and equipment.
No new fuel was burned by ships, or trucks getting the furniture to retail.
No new cardboard was used for cartons, or new Styrofoam or plastic used for packing.
Less furniture in landfills means less greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.
"Consumers who purchase reclaimed and recycled furniture not only help to save our precious environment, they save a little green in their pocketbook, too," Pegler said.
