Russian movement, Jewish heritage of three world-class performers highlight Ventura Music Festival
Recognized as one of the most dynamic and exciting quartets currently performing, The Jerusalem String Quartet comes to Ventura on Friday, May 1. Two of the ensemble´s most recent recordings for Harmonia Mundi were featured as Editor's Choice in Grammophone Magazine and won the BBC Music Magazine Awards best recording of the year, respectively.
Klezmer music is traditional celebration music played at weddings throughout Jewish communities of Eastern Europe. David Krakauer´s Acoustic Klezmer Project updates this timeless party music with a sense of freedom and playfulness that has given rise to a diverse repertoire, including influences of jazz, funk and hip hop. Russian pianist Alexander Ghindin is a seasoned artist emerging as a major force in the international world of piano. In 1994, at age 17, he became the youngest musician to win the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, and in 2007, he won first prize in the Cleveland International Piano Competition. His Tuesday, May 5 concert promises to delight audiences with a traditional Russian program that encompasses the season´s theme.
Also performing at the Ventura Music Festival, April 30 – May 9, are: The Romero Family, Royal Family of the Guitar; Jazz trumpeter Chris Botti; Rising Stars soprano Sophie Wingland and violinist Jourdan Urbach; father and son pianist Dady Mehta and Nuvi Mehta on violin. and Burning River Brass.
