The Hartford Courant, Conn., Roger Catlin column: TVEye: 'The Wanda Sykes Show,' Taylor Swift on 'Saturday Night Live'

By Roger Catlin, The Hartford Courant, Conn.

Nov. 7--Out of the explosion of diverse late-night talk-show hosts this season, from the yelling Mo'Nique on BET to George Lopez on TBS, the one show featuring a comic that may be worth a watch is "The Wanda Sykes Show" (Fox, 11 p.m.). Because it will run roughly live, there was no copy for review. But press materials say it will feature "her personal take on the events of the week."

To follow, Fox is running what's left of the Mitchell Hurwitz animated series about life in a high school, which was canceled after four episodes last spring, "Sit Down, Shut Up" (Fox, midnight).

All of it competes directly with a new "Saturday Night Live" ( NBC, 11:30 p.m.), with Taylor Swift as both host and musical guest. The question is how the show will handle the Kanye West MTV awards incident.

Here's a good idea for public TV: presenting a live studio concert and taking suggestions interactively, as in " John Fogerty: Live by Request" (CPTV, 9 p.m.).

Boxing ( HBO, 9:30 p.m.) returns to Hartford with the nationally televised light-heavyweight Chad Dawson vs. Glen Johnson bout live from the XL Center.

At the same time, there's another one of those mixed martial arts bouts in prime time on "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers" ( CBS, 9 p.m.) featuring top-ranked Fedor Emelianenko of Russia against undefeated American Brett Rogers .

Sounds like a bout but it's not: "Frost/Nixon" (Cinemax, 10 p.m.). It's one of the movie premieres on premium cable tonight alongside "Hotel for Dogs" (HBO, 7:15 p.m.), and "Superhero Movie" ( Showtime, 9 p.m.).
